Major challenges exist within the Special Ed. educational environment for Teachers and Special Needs Assistants whereby self-care and resilience building are necessary for an individual to be in the most balanced healthy state that they can be, in order to support their students as best they can. Stress exists both within and outside of the work environment. It is of paramount importance that Educators are given tools and coping mechanisms to support both themselves, students and parents enabling them to reduce stress in their lives where possible.
Workshop Objectives
Provision of:
• Coping strategies for teachers and SNAs to deal with stress and to help them to be
   more mindful in their lives.
• Strategies for teachers/SNAs to help their students cope with stress and emotional
Proposed workshop structure and content
Through the application of both theory and practice within a workshop setting, the group will review the core stressors that exist for Teachers and SNAs. Stressors that exist for students will also be identified. The programme will visit the following topics:
• Review what stress is and the impact it can have on our mental, emotional and
 physical wellbeing
• Environmental stress
• Why stress exists, healthy levels of pressure
• How stress can be reduced, managed, eliminated
• Day-to-day and longer-term stress
Practical exercises and tools will be explored and experienced, identifying how these can be used effectively both in a self-care format, used on family and friends and used with the student population in a supportive manner.
The core modalities which will be explored will be:
• General lifestyle practices to reduce stress in our lives
• Mindfulness and meditation
• Emotional freedom technique
• Relaxation techniques and exercises for adults and children
All tools used within workshop sessions will be adaptable to suit the individual needs of a child with special needs. Teachers and SNAs can apply their own creativity in the application of the tools ensuring they suit the given needs of a child.
